My first week at Clayton & McKervey has been a truly amazing experience. What first attracted me to the firm was its reputation for excelling in working with international businesses. I did not expect the training experience to be so fulfilling. I feel like after a week of training I am very prepared for what the real work experience will be.
The culture has been the biggest surprise for me. C&M has put a lot of thought into their mission, vision, and values, and it shows through the great employees who work here. Everyone has been very welcoming, and from day one I have felt like an important part of the team. I am most looking forward to working with the FDI team and learning more about the clients I will be working with.
My experience at C&M continues to be exceptional. Every day I learn something new, and I am consistently presented with new challenges to take on. I am part of a great team, and everyone throughout the firm has been very welcoming.
I like the friendliness and down-to-earth nature shown by the shareholders at C&M. There is a real sense of camaraderie working here and the core values are lived each day from the shareholders to the staff.
One particularly memorable moment was completing my first assignment from my manager. I was given the opportunity to perform month-end accounting services for a client and, while I made some small mistakes, it was an important learning opportunity. To be trusted to produce meaningful work from the start at C&M is a great feeling.
My first month at C&M has truly been a wonderful experience. There is so much to learn, but I feel that I am progressing in a meaningful way each and every day here.
If I had to describe the past 6 months in one word it would be “Teamwork”. Everyone that I have talked to at C&M has always been willing to help with questions in any way possible. It doesn’t matter if it is someone in our department or in another department, everyone is committed to the overall success of the firm. It is refreshing to work in an environment that is so cooperative!
The most valuable skill that I have learned is how to accurately budget my time for the week. This was something I never had to give much thought to until I began a career in accounting. I am finding that it has helped me not just when I am at work, but in my school and personal life too.
My advice would be to view each day as a new learning opportunity. Take pride in the work that you are able to perform at your current level, and know with each project or job you are building your base of knowledge.
