Foreign Direct Investment Gets a Boost
I just returned from the SelectUSA Investment Summit held in Washington DC March 22-24, 2015, and thought I would provide this re-cap of foreign direct investment interest and activity at a national level.
The Summit was spearheaded by the US Department of Commerce and attracted over 2,700 people from around the globe as well as economic development organizations from every corner of the United States, high-level government officials, and others working to facilitate foreign direct investment into the United States.
President Obama gave a speech at the Summit on Monday and there were many high ranking government officials in attendance. John Kerry, Secretary of State, was the keynote speaker at the closing session on Tuesday.
Similar to what we see in Michigan, I met companies from Europe, Asia, South America, and other parts of the world who were interested in investigating the opportunities for investment and expansion into the USA. While we see dominance in our client base of companies from Germany, China, France, the UK and Italy, I saw significant interest at this event from Australia and India.
I was there, of course, to meet with companies considering expanding to the US and explain to them the most common considerations of foreign-owned companies expanding into the US.
The folks at Select USA made a concentrated effort to get the word out about this conference. As part of the outreach efforts they made sure our embassies were well aware of this Summit, who in turn made sure the event was well-publicized within their respective jurisdictions. For those of you who are tech savvy, you may have been live streaming the event. A re-cap of the conversation, photos, and videos can be found at @SelectUSA, or via the SelectUSA group on LinkedIn.
If you have friends considering expanding to the US, please put them in touch with us and we will be happy to share more information with them about the Summit. The date for next year’s Summit has not been announced but I trust those that take the time to attend will find it very helpful indeed.
